Best Mowing Height for Grass in Heat and Drought
A lawn cut at the wrong height loses moisture faster and recovers more slowly. Use this grass-by-grass field guide to set the mower correctly when the weather turns hot and dry.
When the weather turns hot and dry, one of the easiest ways to protect a lawn is to stop cutting it too short.
The right mowing height depends on the grass. Tall fescue usually performs better when left tall, while Bermuda and zoysia are naturally maintained much lower. Treating every lawn the same can weaken the turf, expose the soil to more sun, and make drought stress worse.
The quick answer
During heat or drought, mow at the upper end of the recommended range for the grass type. A slightly taller canopy shades the soil, helps it hold moisture longer, and supports a larger root system. Never remove more than one-third of the leaf blade in one mowing.
If the lawn is brown, brittle, or no longer growing, skip the mow. Mower traffic and cutting can add stress without improving the lawn.

Which grasses handle summer stress best?
In climates where they are adapted, Bermuda and zoysia are among the strongest choices for heat and drought. St. Augustine also handles heat well, although its drought performance and recovery vary by cultivar and site. Centipede is heat-adapted but can be less forgiving under prolonged drought.
Among cool-season lawns, tall fescue and many fine fescues generally hold up better with limited water. Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass are more likely to slow down, brown, or go dormant during prolonged summer stress.
Why a taller cut helps in summer
Grass leaves are the plant's solar panels. When too much leaf tissue is removed, the plant has less energy available for roots and recovery. A proper summer mowing height helps the lawn:
- Shade the soil and slow moisture loss
- Maintain longer roots that can reach more water and nutrients
- Compete with weed seedlings
- Avoid scalping and exposed crowns
- Recover more effectively after heat and traffic
Taller is not unlimited. Letting turf grow far beyond its recommended range can cause it to bend over, hold moisture in the canopy, or develop thatch and disease problems. Aim for the top of the correct range, not the highest possible lawn.
Follow the one-third rule
Never remove more than one-third of the grass blade at a time.
- For a 3-inch finished height, mow when the grass reaches about 4.5 inches.
- For a 2-inch finished height, mow when the grass reaches about 3 inches.
If a lawn is overgrown, raise the deck and lower it gradually over the next few cuts instead of forcing it back to the target height in one pass.
A landscaper's hot-weather mowing checklist
- Identify the grass. Do not use the same deck setting on fescue, Bermuda, and St. Augustine.
- Look for stress. Bluish-gray color, folded blades, lingering footprints, or brittle turf mean the lawn needs less traffic.
- Measure the deck safely. Turn the mower off and disconnect the spark-plug wire or remove the battery before measuring.
- Inspect the blade. Torn, frayed, or white grass tips after mowing usually point to a dull blade.
- Check how much will be removed. If the cut would break the one-third rule, raise the deck.
Leave short clippings on the lawn when they are not clumped. They break down and return nutrients to the soil. Spread or remove heavy clumps that could smother the grass.
Common summer mowing mistakes
Cutting short before a vacation. Scalping removes the leaf area grass needs to handle heat and exposes the soil to more direct sun.
Mowing on a fixed calendar. Base the timing on growth and the one-third rule. During drought, mow much less often.
Mowing dormant grass. If brown turf is not growing, cutting serves little purpose and mower traffic may cause more damage.
Using one setting everywhere. A neat-looking fescue lawn and a neat-looking Bermuda lawn require very different heights.
Ignoring shade and slopes. Shade usually calls for the upper end of the range. Sunny slopes and sandy areas dry faster.
